Afraid of the competition?

Posted on Monday, December 13th 2010 3:48 pm by menj in Internet

A local blog aggregator once touted as the “PPS Killer” (I am not going to name it, since I don’t believe in bad-mouthing the “competitor”) has banned PPS’ feeds from their system. I wonder if they are afraid of the “competition”?

Frankly the only reason I added PPS’ feed to their aggregator is because I can. I don’t really think highly of their service, since it just republishes feeds automatically with no community participation attached to it. Not to mention that it loads really slow. But I consider it a compliment for PPS to be banned from their service. I think they must be afraid of the new PPS revamp. Truth be told, however, I never considered it to be a serious “competitor” to PPS, even when PPS was down for three months.

Chris Parry of The Vancouver Sun highlighted some of the comments on the mainstream, hard right-wing blog/news aggregator Free Republic. Among them, a picture of Michelle talking to Malia Obama with the caption: “To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds.” Classy. These mouthbreathing, borderline morons then kept piled on:

“A typical street whore.” “A bunch of ghetto thugs.” “Ghetto street trash.” “Wonder when she will get her first abortion. “Could you imagine what world leaders must be thinking seeing this kind of street trash and that we paid for this kind of street ghetto trash to go over there?” wrote one commenter. “They make me sick …. The whole family… mammy, pappy, the free loadin’ mammy-in-law, the misguided chillin’, and especially ‘lil cuz… This is not the America I want representin’ my peeps,” wrote another.
Such was the onslaught of derision on the site that the person who originally complained about the slurs, a Kristin N., claims only one comment in the first hundred posted actually criticized the remarks as inappropriate.

Would we still care what happens in the Middle East? Would we have cleaner air? More traffic or less? Better or worse heath? What’s your view?

Some leading experts in Britain shared their own views on a collective blog here: http://www.thehybriddebate.com/blog

There is an aggregator site as well on http://www.thehybriddebate.com that will repost your blog entries if you tag them the_hybrid_debate as long as they are related to the question.

Ugh! Oklahoma law prevents direct wine shipments to a consumer.
Third-party wine merchants in our state hold a tight grip on sales and are afraid of competition.
This restriction is not helpful to our state wineries, which are not allowed to ship out of state as well.
We had a few bills before the state legislature, but they died this session.
Does your state allow direct shipment or if not, are you fighting to overturn the law?

In a misguided attempt to aid newspapers, one of America’s most influential judges is suggesting a new copyright law

Those who wish to keep the internet free and open had best dust off their legal arguments. One of America’s most influential conservative judges, Richard Posner, has proposed a ban on linking to online content without permission. The idea, he said in a blog post last week, is to prevent aggregators and bloggers from linking to newspaper websites without paying:

Expanding copyright law to bar online access to copyrighted materials without the copyright holder’s consent, or to bar linking to or paraphrasing copyrighted materials without the copyright holder’s consent, might be necessary to keep free riding on content financed by online newspapers from so impairing the incentive to create costly news-gathering operations that news services like Reuters and the Associated Press would become the only professional, nongovernmental sources of news and opinion.

Posner’s notion set off an eruption from the likes of Jeff Jarvis, Matt Welch and Erick Schonfeld, among others. And they are right to be furious. Not only would Posner stop online media dead in their tracks, but he would also overturn long-established rules of fair use, which, among others things, allow for the reproduction of short excerpts of copyrighted material for the purposes of commentary, parody and the like – precisely what bloggers and aggregators do all the time.

So we’re both 17, and I really really like this girl. This is the problem, like 3 weeks ago i decided to tell her I liked her and I do so through a facebook message but there was a problem and it was never sent. This friend came up to me and said i heard you sent a message to this person that you liked her and I told him everything. Ever since then this guy has been flirting with the girl I like so much and they have become super close. I’m usually not the jealous type and have never really gotten that jealous but lately this feeling is killing me, i’ve talked to my friend but he hasn’t really stopped. I’m going to tell her I like her in like a week when my whole grade goes on a trip but every time I’m alone with her this friend comes an interrupts.I think it has now evolved into a competition, me and my “friend” are now both going for her and I want to win but don’t know how. what should i do?

So I’ve had basketball ingrained in me since I was little. And through everything I have enough skills and understanding that I made JV.But I’ve NEVER played on an official team. The thing is though, is that I really don’t even like basketball. In fact, I really hate the game! I love aspects of it (movement, ball handling, shooting, being intimidating ), but playing the actual game? I detest it. I hate playing defense and all the chaos of bodies in my face. Whether it be my own frustration or how I fit in on the court….ugh. Its funny though is that I enjoy that chaos in soccer!! And I’m not afraid of competition—I play varsity volleyball—-I enjoy getting pumped up.

But I made a COMMITMENT by signing up for the team. I mainly did it because the sports director kept telling me to and I also had a little hope that I’d enjoy it again. If I stuck it out, I could improve a LOT, be an asset to the team ability-wise and get in better shape…..but it would be unfair for the team for me to stay if my heart isn’t in it. No one wants their team mate playing half-ass. I know the dynamics of a competitive team, and I don’t think I can offer my commitment.

Is there anyway i could step-down but still have my dignity and not have everyone thinking I’m a pussy? Its the start of the season

Kiri has, but the people in her hometown will never forget her ‘dumping’ them!

      Based on a previous Q of mine…

      http://answers.yahoo.com/quest.....721AADyDxQ

Some general consensus I extracted from the women responding was that they want to feel like the only one a guy is starting to date. Isn’t it more a fear of competition?

Let me clarify this multiple dating scenario. A guy dates different women in a similar time frame but they are all just date 1-3. He is playing the field but he is NOT a player. For instance, Jack plans a date with Mary and Sarah for Fri/Sat but is not intimate with either one. Should he necessarily tell either one that he is going out with another? Is it really any of their business to know?

Once Jack agrees to be exclusive (and intimate) with Mary, then he should stop dating Sarah or any other woman.

For the debaters who might bring up “Ah, but Thundercat, how would you like it if a woman was dating other men when she went out with you?” I’m fine with it and it has already happened to me. I learned of guy 2 when I went to ask a woman for date 2 after we already had a first date. The way I figure, if a woman chooses me, then she was really interested in me and not picking me by default as she had no other choices.

Debbie Melnyk and Rick Caine tried to do a documentary of their own about Michael Moore and ran into the same sort of resistance Moore himself famously faces in his own films.

The result is “Manufacturing Dissent,” which turns the camera on the confrontational documentarian and examines some of his methods. Among their revelations in the movie, which had its world premiere Saturday night at the South by Southwest film festival: That Moore actually did speak with then-General Motors chairman Roger Smith, the evasive subject of his 1989 debut “Roger & Me,” but chose to withhold that footage from the final cut.

Why do a lot of whites feel threatened by black people who get rich and then start reaching back in their community and pulling out other black people who are determined, hardworking, and focused? They begin to character assassiinate, name calling, making derrogatory statements about him or her for example in the days of slavery caucasians would say black people can’t read and therefore are stupid yet they had a law that if a black person was caught reading he was to immediately be killed!!! What sense did that make? They said the slaves were lazy yet they had slaves do the work they were too lazy to do themselves.. What sense did that make? i’m not racist but why does it seem when black people start talking self empowerment we become racist? are Caucasians afraid of competition on fair playing grounds?

I emailed them asking them nicely if they could remove it but they said their policy was to not remove articles unless there was a legal issue.

I’m having a problem with mice I have put down boxes of poison and they eat them like candy. I’m interested in getting a cat that can actually catch and eliminate mice. My last cat sucked at this the mice weren’t afraid of her at all and she’d run away from/avoid them. Are there any breeds that are particularly good at getting rid of mice both in the sense of keeping them away and catching the ones stupid enough to not stay away?
